The Lady in the Van

The Lady in the Van: Like most people who's kids made them go with them to all of Harry Potter movies - I've fallen in love with the actress Maggie Smith. Her later known "gerontological movies" (e.g. The Best Exotic Merigold Hotel series) made her a real star in my field. So, naturally, I was looking forward to watch the movie "The Lady in the Van". The plot is quite simple: it tells the true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett and an older woman of uncertain origins who 'temporarily' parked her van in Bennett's London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. The movie did not disappoint: a wonderful gerontological movie, with all the needed "ingredients": life course perspective; family relationships; frailty; and most importantly - breaking down ageist biases and stereotypes. Maggie Smith provides an outstanding performance. British in nature (warning to my fellow Americans who are used to Hollywood movies) - but an excellent gerontological movie. See it.
