When I started this blog, I was asked if I will also include documentary movies. My initial reply was negative. I wanted to focus on feature films, popular movies, screened in public theaters. However, as this blog expanded its membership and viewership - more and more people have sent me recommendations for some excellent, innovative documentary movie project.
One of the most fascinating projects that I have recently been exposed to is "The Beauty of Aging" project.
The project was initiated about 6 years ago by Laurie Schur, who decided to start a new path in life when she was in her mid-50s. She enrolled to documentary film class at UCLA... and the rest is history.
Laurie decided to focus on documentary films that relate to the lives of older women. She framed her project under the title "The Beauty of Aging", and she filmed seven diverse American women in their 80s, 90s and 100s.
I have watched the movie "Greedy for Life" which is on the web-site of the project - and is free to watch on-line.
This movie is a beauty and is a great gerontological movie: it allows viewers to be exposed to authentic, and honest voice of an older American couple. No "drama", no "action" - only the daily, rich, and humane lives of older Americans. It is a good example in my view on how films and movies can be tools for social change and for empowerment.
I must admit that I do not know what is the status of this project today - and I can only hope it is still "alive" and is continued in its work to produce new films in the future.
