Nostalgia

Updated: Jul 12, 2018

Nostalgia is a 2018 American drama film. Directed by Mark Pellington, It includes a series of leading stars such as Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Amber Tamblyn, Patton Oswalt, Catherine Keener, Ellen Burstyn, Bruce Dern, John Ortiz, and James LeGros.

Gerontological movies can approach aging and old age from very different perspectives. This movie is interesting in the way it looks at aging: through objects and artifacts. What happens to the "things" we own, posses, and gather as we age, and as we experience loss and death? What happens to the rich memories and meaning that objects "hold" and "accumulate"along the years once their owners die?

While the unique perspective the film addresses issues of aging, life stories and memories is very unique and special, overall the movie was somewhat of a disappointment: it is overall too long, too slow, and most of the time felt a bit "too heavy". My feeling was that while trying to be creative and novel, the film "jumped" from story to story without a significant connection or sense of coherence. Overall, and this may reflect my sense that the film could have been much better in exploring its really fascinating perspective on aging - except for short period of times, the film is not interesting enough. It should be said however that the performance of the different actors, who do their best to hold the movie - was excellent.
